48 Hour Magazine →
Welcome to 48 Hour Magazine, a raucous experiment in using new tools to erase media’s old limits. As the name suggests, we’re going to write, photograph, illustrate, design, edit, and ship a magazine in two days. Here’s how it works: Issue Zero begins May 7th. We’ll unveil a theme and you’ll have 24 hours to produce and submit your work. We’ll take the next 24...

An alternative to the modal lightbox, Popeye offers an elegant solution for enlarging image galleries without leaving the page flow. (via Script & Style)
New theme variable transformation: URLEncoded
staff:
You can now prefix any theme variable with “URLEncoded” to output a URL encoded string. This should make it easier to integrate third-party widgets like Digg, or Facebook’s new Like Button.

How to stop URL typos being stored in Firefox's... →
1. Clear a particular URL from your browsing history Firefox tries to help out users by preserving their browsing history and offering to fill out the address of a previously browsed website as you begin to type it in the address bar. However, if you visit a specific site and don’t want your parents, spouse, boy/girlfriend etc, to find out that you visited it, you can delete just that site from...

“We design the (product launch) keynotes so that the big reveal of the product happens around 40 minutes into the presentation. When the big image of the product appears on screen, we want the time shown to be close to the actual time on the audience’s watches. But we know we won’t hit 40 minutes exactly.” — We finally find out [why all the iPhone marketing material shows the time at...
Discover how much power you have as a UK voter in... →
In the 2005 election, more than half of all voters voted against their winning MP. Their votes were simply thrown away. In the UK, the only voters with any real power to choose the government are those who live in marginal constituencies. Less than 20% of constituencies can be considered marginal. The rest of us have little or no power to influence the outcome of the election.
This is...
BBC News - BNP facing Marmite legal action →
The maker of Marmite is threatening legal action against the British National Party to stop it from using a jar of the spread in a party broadcast.
You go for it marmite! Love the stuff. Have to say BNP once more not the brightest - current marmite ad is a spoof for “the Hate Party”. Now many of us may well think the BNP does = The Hate Party, but you would have thought they’d...

How Apple Lost the Next iPhone - Leak - Gizmodo →
There it was, a shiny thing, completely different from everything that came before. He reached for a phone and called a lot of Apple numbers and tried to find someone who was at least willing to transfer his call to the right person, but no luck. No one took him seriously and all he got for his troubles was a ticket number. He thought that eventually the ticket would move up high enough and that...

Last.fm – If it doesn't scrobble it doesn't count →
As passionate, tech-savvy music fans, Last.fm users are among the first to adopt new music technologies. Accordingly, many of these new services are now adding — or have already added — scrobbling support. Our scrobbling data shows that, for some time now, people have been using multiple music services and devices, then coming back to their Last.fm profiles to answer the question “what should I...
TDC2 2010 - Display Type | The FontFeed →
This is the difficult episode, because in my opinion the Display Type category holds at least one clunker and one puzzling selection. Already I had some problems with the fact that none of this year’s terrific sans serifs nor scripts had received an accolade. But when you see what did win, well… that sure left me scratching my (bald) head.
Yeah, not the one I’d have gone for either.

Infinite Scroll is something that is swiffering the blogosphere. Instead of continuing to click “next page” over and over, it just loads the next page for you as you scroll down the page you are on.

TDC2 2010 - Text Faces | The FontFeed →
Now that I’ve covered the Type Systems, let’s move on to the Text Faces category of the TDC2 2010 Type Design Competition. Judging text faces is always a tricky thing. Display type can go for sheer impact, but text type needs to be inconspicuous to a certain extent. How much personality is allowed to shine through before it distracts from the process of reading? Do we favour type that...

TDC2 2010 - Type Systems | The FontFeed →
I’m a bit torn. On Twitter I announced I wasn’t entirely happy with this year’s TDC2 results. This was an underlying reason for asking everyone who entered the contest to send me their submissions. I needed context, to try to understand why some unusual choices were made – in my opinion at least. My remark on Twitter didn’t go unnoticed, and several people asked me my “unedited” opinion about the...
Customise How Tumblr Tweets
I’ve been under a rock again haven’t I? Only just noticed that next to “send to Twitter” you have the option to edit what’s going. DOH. Please enlighten me folks as to HOW long I’ve been under said rock?!

Cadmus is a real-time service that manages your stream (Twitter, FriendFeed and RSS) by displaying the most relevant content since the last time you checked in. It helps you get caught up on what you have missed.

The whole experience just made me feel so awkward. I remember when I could walk into an Apple Store, tell an employee what I need, pay for it and leave. They would treat me like a regular person and talk like one too. I realize it was the release of the iPad, but the entire time I felt like I won it or needed their approval in order to get it. Congratulations? I’m a consumer there to purchase a...

Typefoundry: HMS Victory Lettering Fail →
In the post with the title English vernacular there is a reference to the name painted at the stern of HMS Victory in 2005, when she was refurbished with the intention of bringing her back to her state in 1805. The one conspicuous failure in this well-intentioned programme was the anachronistic choice of ‘Trajan’ capitals for the name
